IFS identifies three main types of parts, each playing an important role in your inner world:

Exiles carry our emotional wounds, vulnerabilities, and painful memories—often connected to experiences of rejection, abandonment, or loss. While other parts may try to keep them hidden, Exiles also hold our deepest sensitivity, creativity, joy, and capacity for genuine connection. Managers work behind the scenes to keep life organized and prevent painful emotions from surfacing. They might appear as the inner critic, perfectionist, planner, helper, or problem-solver—parts that keep you striving, productive, or prepared.
