The Basics

A few things people often want to know first.

You do not need a diagnosis, a referral or a perfect explanation of what is wrong before reaching out. You can begin with what has been difficult and figure out the next step with a therapist.

No referral is usually needed.

You can contact Heart & Mind Therapy directly to explore psychotherapy.

Starting Therapy

Do I even need therapy?

You do not have to wait until something becomes a crisis before asking for support.

Therapy may be worth considering when something is taking up more space in your life than you want it to. That might be anxiety, stress, low mood, relationship patterns, grief, a difficult experience, a major transition or simply the sense that something has felt off for a while.

You can also come to therapy because you want to understand yourself better, strengthen boundaries, work on patterns or have a confidential place to think through something important.

No. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or even know exactly how to describe what is happening. You can start with what you have been noticing and what you would like to understand or change.

You can contact Heart & Mind Therapy directly and do not usually need a physician's referral to book psychotherapy.

Insurance plans can have their own requirements, so if you intend to use benefits, check whether your particular plan requires a referral for reimbursement.

The consultation is a short conversation before therapy begins. You can share what you are looking for help with, ask questions about the therapist's style or experience and get a sense of whether you would feel comfortable working together.

You do not have to make a decision during the consultation.

Therapist Fit

How do I choose the right therapist?

Credentials matter, but therapy is also a relationship. How you feel talking with the therapist matters too.

Consider what you want help with, how you prefer a therapist to communicate, whether you want practical strategies or deeper exploration, your schedule and your budget.

You can use our therapist matching tool to narrow the team based on what you are looking for, or contact us if you would like help thinking through the options.

These professions can overlap, but their training and regulated scopes differ. Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers can provide psychotherapy within their professional scope. Psychologists may provide psychotherapy and psychological assessment, including diagnosis within their scope. Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in mental health and can prescribe medication.

Counselling and psychotherapy are also not always cleanly divided into “short-term” versus “long-term” care. The type of work depends on your needs, the clinician's scope and the treatment being provided.

You are allowed to talk about the fit. You can tell your therapist when something is not working, ask to change the pace or direction of therapy, or decide that you would prefer to work with someone else.

A useful therapeutic relationship should have room for questions and feedback.

Yes. Culture, family expectations, migration, identity, spirituality and faith can be included when they are relevant to your experience.

Optional Christian counselling is available through participating therapists for clients who would like faith included in their therapy.

Fees & Insurance

What will therapy cost?

Cost and insurance can influence which therapist feels realistic for you. We try to make those details clear before you begin.

Current session fees range from $90 to $185 depending on the therapist's role, training, registration and experience.

A supervised MSW student option is available at the lower end of that range. You can learn more about sliding-scale therapy or compare therapist fees before booking.

Many extended health benefit plans include psychotherapy or mental-health services, but coverage depends on your specific policy and the professional designation of the therapist you see.

Before your first appointment, ask your insurer whether your plan covers the therapist's credential, what percentage is reimbursed, whether there is a per-session limit and what your annual maximum is.

Direct billing is available for many eligible plans. Whether a claim can be submitted depends on your insurer, your specific benefits plan and the therapist's credential.

When direct billing is available, we can submit an eligible claim after your session. You remain responsible for any portion not paid by your insurer.

Visit our Direct Billing page for a fuller explanation.

A declined or unavailable direct-billing submission does not necessarily mean you have no coverage. Some plans require the client to submit the claim instead.

If we cannot bill your plan directly, you are responsible for the session fee and we can provide a receipt for you to submit to your insurer.

Insurance coverage is determined by your insurer. Heart & Mind Therapy cannot guarantee that a claim will be approved or reimbursed.

The Therapy Process

What is therapy actually like?

Therapy is collaborative. You and your therapist develop the direction together rather than following the same formula for every client.

No. Your therapist considers what you want help with, your current circumstances, your strengths, your preferences and what becomes clearer as therapy progresses.

Approaches such as CBT, DBT, IFS, somatic work and other approaches are tools that may be used when they fit the work you are doing.

No. You can begin by describing what has been difficult and what you hope will feel different. Your therapist can explain which approaches may be useful and why.

If you enjoy understanding the different methods before starting, you can also explore our Therapy Approaches page.

There is no reliable number of sessions that applies to everyone. How therapy unfolds depends on what you are working on, how long it has been affecting you, the goals you have, the frequency of sessions and many individual factors.

Some people come for focused short-term work while others benefit from therapy over a longer period. Your therapist can talk with you about progress and whether the work still feels useful.

No. You can talk openly with your therapist about what feels manageable, what you do and do not want to discuss and the pace that feels appropriate.

Practical Questions

Where and how can I attend therapy?
